Louis Pouzin awarded Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering
With little fanfare compared to the weight of the circumstances, during a formal reception in London on 25 June 2013, Louis Pouzin was awarded one of the first trophies of the Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II herself.
On 18 March 2013, Princess Anne, daughter and second child of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, had announced the winners of the very first Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering [1, 2]. The 1 million GBP Prize (approx. 1.5 million USD) is to be awarded annually to the individual or team judged to have made a significant contribution to engineering globally.
The premier award went to Louis Pouzin, Robert Kahn, Vint Cerf, Tim Berners Lee and Marc Andreessen for their ground-breaking work, starting in the 1970s, which led to the Internet and the World Wide Web. Marc Andreessen was not present at the formal reception in London.
Sadly the announcement of the winners was given scant coverage in the newspapers, and marginalised on the TV news.
Even more sadly, at least on Facebook it seems that more people know about the passing of my (relatively obscure) aunt Giuseppina Lisi (1931–2013), than they do about the Fathers of the Internet, and the World Wide Web, receiving an otherwise substantial prize and honour. Once upon a time, in Italy, they made a bigger deal, the day later, if an important soccer player got injured!
Unfortunately I could not purchase a picture or two of the event, because Getty Images will charge over 400 USD just for the two-year, and limited, and educational use of one of their pictures! So I'll do the next best thing, and just point you to the right pictures and articles:
